UWM Spiral Gardens Adaptive Management Plan

University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee

Developed in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee Office of Sustainability, this adaptive management plan focused on the restoration and long-term stewardship of the Spiral Gardens Bioswale System. The site serves as a functioning stormwater management feature, native habitat area, educational resource, and public green space within an urban campus environment.

The plan evaluated the site's hydrologic performance, vegetation communities, ecological health, infrastructure condition, and educational opportunities. Recommendations were developed to improve stormwater infiltration, strengthen native plant communities, reduce invasive species pressure, enhance pollinator habitat, and improve the overall ecological function of the bioswale system. The project also incorporated strategies for public engagement, educational signage, campus involvement, and long-term volunteer stewardship.

A key component of the plan was the development of an adaptive management framework designed to ensure that future maintenance and restoration activities can respond to changing site conditions over time. Rather than prescribing a fixed set of actions, the plan provides a flexible management approach that supports continued ecological improvement while maintaining the site's role as a living laboratory for sustainability and environmental education.
